New e-Book: Dave Matthews Band- A Collection of Photos From Camping at the Gorge

New e-Book: Dave Matthews Band- A Collection of Photos From Camping at the Gorge by By Marina Hansen & Billy Newman I started this new road trip in early September, I was happy to begin the trip by traveling to see the Dave Matthews Band perform at the Gorge over Labor Day weekend. This event was certainly focused more on taking time off, meeting friends and listening to some great live music which has always been one of my favorite things. Spending a weekend at the gorge was more focused on enjoying live music and friends then it was spent working to create photographs of the event. Never the less, Marina and I have gone through and made a collection of some of our favorite photographs from that weekend. This book is a collection of 29 images from 3 days …

Ocean Rocks in Bandon Oregon

Nikon D2H 50mm- 3.0’’ – F/1.8 – ISO 200 This is a photo that I just finished working on. I took this yesterday evening during the blue hour in Bandon Oregon.  This photo is a little noisier then I would like it to be, but that is the price I pay for shooting with a DSLR that is 10 years old. In this photograph I really like the wash of the waves as they moved up and then receded back to the ocean, this effect was created in camera by dropping the shutter speed down to a few seconds. As the image was captured on to the sensor, the waves rolled in and changed the landscape, and the light. So the image is left with a slow washed look where the shore is.   I also like that you can see …

Impressions from the Oregon Coast

This past weekend Marina and I spent a night camping on the Oregon Coast south of Newport. We had a great time enjoying the September weather on the coast. Saturday evening I worked on a few impressions of the sunset. I ended up liking this photo the most out of the series I shot.   I have been working on images that take advantage of the light just before and just after sunset.  I really like the unusual  feel that images made in the twilight hours have.  This image however is one of my first attempts in creating impressionistic work.  I was trying to capture the light and lines of the beach at sunset without showing a specific details.  I worked on a few versions of this image trying to get the lines and exposure closer to what I could work with. …

This is another image that I shot at Pikes Place.  This fella was working at one of the fish markets adding ice to the fresh fish. I saw him go to the back, get a shovel load of ice and return to the front to toss it on to the days catch. I set up this shot, tried to set my exposure and focus before he was in position, he walked out and shoveled the ice onto the fish and I took this picture.  Check out this image and others here on my 7-24 project site http://7-24photo.tumblr.com/post/31758346674/this-is-another-image-that-i-shot-at-pikes-place

This image is part of my on going film project, you can see my growing collection of film photographs at http://7-24photo.tumblr.com/ This was taken at Pikes place in Seattle. I worked with my Nikon FG 20 film camera a lot during my time in Seattle. Really interesting place to work on photos. Lots of contrast, lots of characters.  You can see the original post at http://7-24photo.tumblr.com/post/31754033130/this-was-taken-at-pikes-place-in-seattle-i-worked

Backpacking in the Wallowa Mountains.

Our  tent  near dusk at horseshoe lake in the Wallowa Mountains. Backpacking in the Wallowa Mountains is always an adventure.  I am very glad that I was able to return to the mountains this year.  It is a great adventure, and also an incredible struggle.  The remote scenic beauty however makes the entire struggle worth it.  It would be easy to say that Marina and I over packed for this excursion.  We carried to backpacking backpacks full of camping gear and warm cloths to get us through the freezing alpine nights. We also carried most of our camera gear which is not made to be light. All I can say is that it was a pretty tough hike up the mountain.   I am really proud of this image.  I am trying to learn a more in depth, more refined post processing …

Camping at the Gorge for the Dave Matthews Band

As it normally goes for me, I am a little bit busier than I had expected, but in fairness this is the busy hectic part of the trip. I am now just wrapping up the first section of the trip. Today I am back in Portland Oregon, currently working out of a Peets coffee while we take turns feeding the parking meter outside (which reminds me of how much I can not wait for the actual wilderness camping that’s coming up). This past Labor Day weekend we spent our time at the Gorge in Washington, watching the Dave Matthews Band perform.  Camping out for Dave Matthews is a really unique experience.  The event is huge, we arrived Friday night and set up camp around hundreds and hundreds of other cars and RVs and  house-boats that arrived to spend the weekend there.  The …

Postcard from The Gorge

Right now I am currently working out of a Starbucks in Seattle near pikes place. We have been gone now for almost a week. I think I have put about 600 new miles on my vary old car and had [part of 😉 ] the best trip ever.  Dave Matthews was a great experience.  Ready to call myself a ‘DAVER’ like the temporary locals say.  This is my first time camping at the gorge, it still has to be the best venue I have been to, ready to go back for Sasquatch in 9 months. While we were there I tried to make a strong handful of photos of the people places and mood of the event all while avoiding the growing population of Bros.

A Few Travel Notes

A few travel notes At this time I am probably off somewhere near the Gorge,  ready to watch  the Dave Matthews band perform.  While I write this however, it is Friday afternoon and I am still spending some time in Hood River, working on a few projects and catching up on some road work. This weekend really starts the trip for me.  Friday evening we are meeting up with a few friends and traveling to the Gorge for Labor Day weekend.  Really excited to watch some real live music, I have heard nothing but great things about the experience of watching DMB at the gorge. Just glad I can join the group of typical northwest young people and say that I saw Dave at the Gorge. I am also really interested in the photographic possibilities of this trip. I have …
