Structure fire on Redwood ave

This evening in Grants Pass there was a structure fire that started at about 7:45 pm across the street from the redwood nursery. Fortunatly the building had been vacant for some time.  I was down town, headed toward riverside park to meet some friends when I saw the Smoke coming from around the fairgrounds. One of the first fire trucks pulled out a block in front of me, I decided to follow the fire truck and head for the smoke. I was down town taking some photos with my nikon D1  so I had my camera with me. I was one of the first people on the scene as the fire trucks had just arived. I grabbed my camera and was able to catch some of the fire in these photos. Within minutes there were tons of people looking and watching the fire trucks role in one after the other as they tried to put out the fire.  I was one of the first people to show up with a camera but within just minutes there were at least a dozen people with canon digital rebels,  not to mention the endless point and shoots or cell phone cameras.

Unfortnatly for me my nikon D1 is 10 year old technology, ( i left my d40 at home) The battery in that camera only lasts for abou, an hour of regular shooting.  During the last 20% of its charge it becomes unreliable, still turning on but sometimes not meetering or activating the shutter. Surfice it to say i was able to get about 20 shoots in before it pretty much crapped out on me. The only way for me to get another photo was to take the battery out, tap it on my leg and then reinsert it , wait 10 seconds , turn it on and snap a picture, then repeat.

The building that caught fire was old and had been abandoned ever since I can remember.  It was made of regular wood planks and almost resembled a barn with tall unmaintained weeds growing across the property.

within 20 min the fire department had a handle on the situation so I left. There have been no reports yet about what started the fire.

Here is the twitter feed as I found out about it , Also the url is a link to the rest of the images.

Here are some of the photos of the fire.
