Photographing The Owyhee River Camping Gear Tips Lighter tape, hand warmers, headlamp wrist
I made it out to Eastern Oregon. I’ve been camping out for one night, and I got some gear tips to go over. I had prepped in advance for a trip out here, and some of it has worked out to help me. Staying out here in the cold, I have to tell you, and it’s cold, it’s wet, it’s been wet, it’s wintertime too, there’s a lot of cold, damp sagebrush, a lot of wind, a lot of clouds, a lot of photographs too. So it’s been fun. I’ve been making some progress on some photo stuff and have been finally able to shoot some video stuff that I’ve wanted to get produced for a long time. So that has been an advance.
I wanted to focus on a set of equipment tips. I have a lighter on the first one and about a foot of duct tape wrapped onto the handle. Actually, on this one, it’s gorilla tape; it’s a bit tackier. I’ve got my pocket knife in my pocket all the time. It has about a foot of duct tape wrapped onto the handle of the Bic lighter. It stays in my pocket all the time. While hiking around and walking, I grabbed that tape and then used it on anything I needed. So if I have a rip, tear, or something else that I need, I’m able to get it when I have access; I’ve found many uses for that. Some of it’s been efficient.

Another gear that I’ve been using a ton on days out is packages of those hand warmers. I get my camera bag set up, and I get my coffee in the morning. Then I break open a couple of packages of those hand warmers. You can get these hand warmers anywhere. Sometimes the foot warmer packages are a little easier to use in shape. It is sometimes more expensive to get those warmers. You can get them in bulk, breaking them up and then throwing them in the pockets or throwing them into the toes.
The pads for the feet work better because they’re a bit flatter. So they don’t obstruct your foot and shoe placement as much. Trying to put warming pieces like those hand warmers into my socks works tremendous down near my foot. So anything to sort of keep parts of the feet warm has been suitable for hikes out there.
LED Flashlights – COAST Products
I have this headlamp flashlight. I talked about flashlights a while back. I got a couple of handheld flashlights that work well. I like having my headlamps on trips, backpacking, and traveling. I like having the giant flashlight around. That’s always a couple of feet away so that I can grab it at nighttime. However, I have that headlamp around, so you have your two hands-frees in any way you look. You have your light.

When I go to bed, I usually have my top handheld flashlight around somewhere. I’ve also been trying to learn this trick to take your headlamps to get off your head. I loop it over my wrist. Sometimes, I would wear it around my neck as a necklace tangled up when I am in my sleeping bag. I wanted to have the headlamps around to grab it at night when I woke up, and I needed some light to do something in a hurry.
I like to take it on my left hand or right hand, and if it interferes with your watch, you can use the other side. I loop the headlamp over my hand. I strap it up twice, crossing over like a figure eight of the circle. I cross it over my hand again. And then I do that once more until it’s a tight wrap on my wrist. I’ve got my headlamp strapped up on my wrist while I’m sleeping. So it’s pretty comfortable. It’s not overly tight. If you wake up and need to hit your light real fast, you go right to your wrist, you hit your button, and then you got your torch right away. I’ve been trying to do that while camping out in a tent. If I wake up in the middle of the night, I can grab hold of my light and quickly get to whatever I need.
