Blue Hour along the Lost Coast

This image was taken back in October along the Lost Coast during our week there. I had passed by this image a few times, perhaps because of the dark shadows on the left side of the frame, but I like the lines of the clouds as they stretch north, up the coast. I also like the blue wash of tide over the rocks.

iPhone Wallpaper Project

As it is a new year, I am starting a new project. I will be going through my photographs and selecting a handful of them to optimize for iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 backgrounds.  This image below was made almost a year ago now, one of my favorite images from this past year. This is the image that I am using right now as my iPhone background. If you are interested, click the photo to …

Sunset along the Lost Coast

This photo is taking me back a couple of months. This image was made during our time along the Lost Coast. It was a photo that I flagged, and edited, but never posted. I will be posting a few more photos from my trip over the next few weeks as I go through my library and edit the number down to something I can manage.  Then I will start looking into layouts for a book …

Happy Holidays

An image of my home blanketed with snow after last Thursdays snow storm. It has been years since the last time we had this much snow fall in southern Oregon.  We were one of the fortunate homes in the area that did not loose power during the storm.  A few friends of mine have been without power for the better part of a week now. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas

New Hardcover Portfolio Book: Photographs

Since I have returned home from my time out on the road I have been working on editing and categorizing the photographs that I took over this past year. The goal of course is to put these images to use. I am sure that I will be working with Marina to put together another book that covers our experiences on the road, and I am excited to start working on that project. I also have …

Sunset in Arizona

This driving north through Arizona, we drove down a long dirt road and took a handful of photographs of this storm cloud that stretched across the western landscape. The setting sun to the west brought a powerful warm stripe of color to the scene. I have been back home for just over a week now.  It’s great to be spending some time with my family for the holidays. Now is the time that I will be …

Timelapse from the Sierra Nevadas

I made this timlapse video while we were travelling south down HWY 395 near Bishop California.  I attached my little action camera to a mount on my bike rack.

From Death Valley to Sedona

Took this photograph of Marina on one of our stops in Death Valley,  before we we left and drove into Las Vegas.  Today Marina and I are in Sedona Arizona. It has been an interesting change from Death Valley to Vegas, to Phoenix, to Sedona. We will be travelling out of town here soon to do some hiking and some exploring, hope to scout out a few places to take some photos later this evening. …

The Vegas detour

Right now I am sittingin a coffeeshop on the Las Vegas strip,  Marina and I left the area of Lone Pine California a few days back to travel through Death Valley. One of my goals for our time in Death Valley was to travel to the racetrack playa, an area in remote region of the Death Valley NP ( though honestly it all seems pretty remote). We did our best to make the trip out …

Sunrise on the Sierra Nevadas

I took this photo yesterday morning just after the sun started to come up.  We drove up the road from camp and set up near the top of a hill.  Glad we caught the light.  Really like this image.

Postcard from the Alabama Hills

This image was taken this morning just after sunrise. Marina and I have been camping just east of Mt Whitney in the Alabama hills.  We are taking advantage of the BLM land and camping out for a few days before heading to Death Valley.  We woke up early this morning to head out and try and make some photos before the sun got to high in the sky.  After we wrapped up and made it …

HWY 395 South

This photo was taken just off of HWY 395 south of Carson city. We have been doing a lot of driving over the past few days.  We travelled from Sonora California north on Hwy 49 in a huge rain storm. Then we travelled east toward Lake Tahoe.  That was a long steep climb for my old car to make, but we made it over the pass before the approaching storm added any more snow to …

Leaving Yosemite

This image was taken by Marina the other day in Yosemite.  It is a really incredible place, but far to over regulated to feel like a wilderness.  Today we are in Sonora California working on editing photos and working on some of our projects.  Next up we head toward HWY 395 to travel down past the sierra nevada mountains.  Should be beautiful… but freezing cold.   Watching the weather closely and strongly considering heading south …

Postcard from Yosemite

Postcard from Yosemite. Marina and I endured the cold for a couple freezing nights but it has been worth it. We arrived at the park early Sunday morning on my (and Marina Hansen‘s) birthday. Yosemite is an easy place to photograph, but it It’s hard to make something original. It’s hard to find a spot where Ansel Adams tripod holes have not already been.  This image is one of my favorites from Sunday, the light is …

Finding Creativity 2

This image was taken years ago. I think it was sometime back in 2005.  By all accounts this photo was a mistake.  An image made by accident creating a dragged effect on the light as I moved my camera across the textured ground.   I found this photograph in my archives.  I have been recently going through my old images looking for common elements and colors.

Finding creativity 1

This image was made in Seattle in early in September. This photograph is part of a film project I have been working on for a few months.  The colors and the shapes add to a certain mood that I really like.  I will be starting an on going project here on my blog, I thing a little more structured.  I will be going back through some of my older photos, many of them are photos …

Halloween in San Francisco

I have yet to begin the process of sorting through photos from the past week of working living and camping around the city of San Francisco.  This city is [to date] my favorite. Something about it, something in the way that it feels to be there is just so cool. We stayed at the Marin Headlands for three days. It was great to be in the city the night that the Giants won the series. …

Tide pool at sunset along the lost coast

This image was photographed in a tidal pool during sunset in northern California’s Lost Coast. This image was a challenge to create, but the incredible light made it easier than usual. For this image I rolled up the legs of m pants and stood in the center of this tidal pool.  I set up my tripod as low to the waters surface as I could. To get the soft still look of the water in …

Working from the road

Marina took this image yesterday while we were editing photographs in my car. Part of what makes this kind of a trip possible is the combination of new technologies that are smaller cheaper and lighter then they have ever been. We are taking advantage of all of our tools to help us produce work from the road. I admire photographers of the past that would have had to travel with boxes of film stock, then …

Postcard from the King Range Wilderness Area

I made this photograph yesterday evening just after sunset.  This was taken on the beach of the King Range Wilderness area in the Lost Coast.  The glow on the ocean was created by the crescent moon setting in the west. For this image I left the shutter open for nearly 2 minutes to create the smooth, even look on the ocean water.  Right now we are camped out along the lost coast. I am currently in the …

3 Photos from Sisters Rock

Marina and I are now in Arcata California spending some time with my friend Tyler before continuing to travel south. Next stop should be somewhere in the trinity alps or the Lost Coast, either will be an adventure, but the choice may be weather dependent.  While we are here in Arcata, we are both trying to work through the images that we have been working on.  Catching up on ‘work’ and trying to increase our …

Postcard from sisters rock on the Oregon Coast

Camping along the Oregon Coast for the next couple days. We arrived yesterday at sisters rock just north of Gold Beach and just south of Port Orford. Everything seems to have a way of breaking while your out camping. We already had to macgyver the tent pole and rethread the campstove to fit the propane tank. The light changes are really cool out here. We arrived yesterday in really thick fog, couldn’t see more than …

Backpacking along the Lower Rogue

This photograph of the rogue river was made Saturday evening looking out over blossom bar. Traveling along the Lower Rogue has been a great addition to our adventure. Instead we drove the car up in the mountains along an old, …
