Mars and Saturn near the star Antares
This image was taken along with a series of photographs while on a trip in eastern Oregon to capture an astronomical event. This image shows Mars the brightest spot in the image near its position of opposition. This is the time when Mars is at its brightest and closest to the earth. During this time of June Saturn was also near its position of opposition. Both planets were in the constellation of Scorpio in the southern sky.
The photograph in this post was created while the camera was on a tripod. Doing a long exposure light from the sky and stars is captured into the lens and amplified over a period of nearly 30 seconds. The resulting effect allows us to see parts of the texture in the Milky Way and the bright and dim stars that make up the constellation in the south. This photo from 2016 shows Mars and Saturn near the star Antares in Scorpio while the planets where near their opposition.
