Install PopOS Linux
Pop OS is a Linux distribution, which is based on ubuntu.
I have written about installing Linux Mint onto an older mac book that I had. I’ve been looking around online and finding some information about some of the different distributions out there.
I downloaded the distribution of pop OS, installed it onto a thumb drive. Then, I used this excellent utility that you can get on a Mac called etcher. Etcher makes an ISO a live boot, a USB thumb drive with that ISO image.
I downloaded the ISO and made a bootable USB thumb drive on my MacBook Pro. This distribution was supposed to be ready for people to use out of the box. Although the desktop environment is simple, it does mimic the Mac OS environment. Driver support was very good for the mac book I installed it on.
It’s an open operating system; you have to add the files and documents from your hard drives. These hard drives have photos and files and all documents that should be integrated into your Linux work environment. Incorporating those into your use through your operating system is how you can tell if it’s working for you or not. Working with the file system is a way to test if the deeper parts of the operating system function are working for you.
There’s a page that lists the applications you can install. They’re all free. A lot of them are open-source applications available for Linux. There’s also private license software and other freeware.
There are some excellent apps and utilities available for download. Libra office is installed as document management and creation suite like Microsoft office. You can get slack. You can download chromium, and it comes with Firefox as the default browser.
I noticed there are some limitations, too. There’s no access to the Adobe suite of software. Media development software has always been behind on the Linux platform. Third-party manufactures often do not make Linux-specific drivers for studio interfaces. Open source solutions that developers created had developed were notoriously glitchy. As a result, Linux has not been a recommended platform for professional media creation workstations. Now with specific software like DaVinci resolve, video editing workflows are possible. However, photo and multitrack audio production are still hindered.
I downloaded rawtherapee. That’s an application available for Linux, and Macintosh, and windows that allow you to edit your photographs, your raw photographs. It’s supposed to be a photo editing workstation like Lightroom is. It’s free, open-source software. It’s different than some of the use that you would get in Lightroom. There are some metadata editing modules in there. There’s color correction editing in there, too. There are many complicated things to get into: you have three levers to change for each channel of color contrast.
It’s an absurd amount of controls to get the software to adjust the photo the way you would want it to. Many of the adjustment levers made available to an editor only make the images look much worse. It’s a classic Linux problem. Difficulties with configuring open-source software. I’m sure there’s troubleshooting and tinkering to get it ready. This is why people don’t transition to Linux quickly.
Pop-os Linux is a good starter distro of Linux. This os is well documented. The installation software etcher makes the problems of creating a complex multi-boot laptop partition go away. I will run Linux as my primary operating system for a couple of weeks. I will be learning new terminal commands. I want to learn file management. I would also like to experiment with the limits of available web app support in Linux while working in Firefox.
